Thanks for the kind words! Condon, Tonatiuh, and JLo spoke at the premiere. Condon did a quick intro and then all three did a 15 minute Q&A after the film. Condon, Tonatiuh, and producer Barry Josephson did a 10 minute pre-screening Q&A at the second screening. While many in the creative team were present, none spoke. (I forgot to mention that Colleen Atwood’s costumes are terrific, as is the production design.) The orchestrations / arrangements seemed pretty similar to the original. There are some differences to the beginning of “Her Name is Aurora” — it’s perkier since it opens the movie-within-the-movie — but once she gets to the “Last night, I went to see the gypsy” portion, it sounds similar to the original. The arrangements of the removed songs that instead serve as underscoring are really interesting. For instance, “Over the Wall” underscores a moment in the movie-within-a-movie where they’re in a club similar to the old Copacabana, so the changes to the orchestrations suit the moment. And then “Dear One” is a complete shift since it’s acoustic and sung by two people in Spanish, but it still sounds lovely. If the arrangements were vastly different than the originals, I probably would’ve been distracted / annoyed, and that was definitely not the case. |
