I love stage musicals, but I don't usually enjoy movie musicals, because it's more difficult to accept "people breaking into song" in the more realistic medium of film. Then, when the songs end, I often feel the need for applause or some kind of break before transitioning back to dialogue, but maybe that's just my conditioning from watching musicals on stage. For that reason, I love the movie of Cabaret, which uses only the diegetic songs from the show, and I can understand why the Kiss of the Spider Woman film might take the same approach. |
