| To the naked eye, you seem to be hoping that by confounding two issues, you might drag the constituency for one into the other. Good luck with that but in my experience that kind of attempted manipulation usually backfires, because it doesn't make sense to combine for any reason other than manipulation and very few people like feeling manipulated. Beyond that, a few thoughts. 1. Wash Post had a paywall long before Bezos came along. 2. The paper did not lose "countless" subscriptions; it lost about 10%, not all on account of Bezos, but let's assume it was a large part of the total. 3. The richest men in the country do not buy large media outlets to make money. The value calculus for them is in power and influence. 4. Maraniss is/was a fine journalist but on this piece he was too close to his subject, and also too far away. As a result, I'd suggest he missed the story somewhere along the way. The "soul" of newspapers has been ebbing for more than a generation. The key trigger was when the model of "the paper" deprecated. The old school publishers were at a loss and the value of their cherished papers plummeted to the point point of becoming unsustainable. Many closed up shop, others sold to anyone who perceived a different way of valuing the brand. Now, enter one of the richest men in the world. He is not interested in keeping the light for democracy bright; he wants, as I said, power and influence. Real journalists (the light seekers aka the truth seekers) have moved on to more focused and more nimble models of reporting. I am not a fan of Bezos but I am a fan of logic. |
