For a truly hit show, lots of people could not buy the best seats, or any seats at all. In the collected letters of Oscar Hammerstein II, we see him constantly having to refuse to sell his house seats privately to fans who could not get seats at the box office. One entreaty he accepted was that of a neighbor who had done some work for him, who asked for tickets to take his bride to see "Oklahoma" on their wedding day. "What day is the wedding?" Hammerstein asked. ""What day have you got?" came the reply. |
