| Your post led me to thinking about the common practice in British theatres to have a separate entrance for the balcony (or balconies) to ensure a separation of classes. (I guess it was true in Elizabethan times, as well, but then the most desirable seating area WAS the balcony and it was the plebs- or groundlings- who had to stand downstairs). Even as small a theatre as the Almeida - which is a converted library, I think - has a dedicated circle entrance for the very snug upstairs rows (an area that I'd strongly dissuade people from sitting in if they can avoid it). Am I right in thinking the Belasco has a separated upper balcony entrance? |
