Bailey is indeed too old. Erivo makes some sense as her sister’s older chaperone. But their romance scene is very very grown-up. Too much so. And Ariana’s lush beauty is far from what the dizzy nubile narcissist Glinda should be in part one, despite how much Ariana lightens her speaking voice to seem vacant and young. Chenoweth (and Ashford; I don’t know them all) may have erred too far in childlike caricature, but that choice (probably Mantello’s) made sense of the show’s progression from light to dark. Mantello’s vision was exciting and smart; Chu’s is too moralizing, too much soap opera for a show which should be bigger than teenage feelings.
