Frankly, I think it's disgraced that a super rich superstar music legend like Elton John would let any of his broadway scores go unrecorded. Not just for his score, but for the work done by the performers and orchestrator and MD etc to have a life forever. I know it's throwing "good money after bad" in the sense that there's no reason to think a cast album of a failed show will make money... but that doesn't stop most broadway musicals from getting a cast album. So if the issue is that no label would pay for it (which is hard to believe with Lestat), then I genuinely think he should pay for it himself. He has more than enough money to do it, and the ability to make a lot more money, it's not like the cost of a cast album is him losing his nest egg. I suspect he doesn't pay for them (or did he not *want* Lestat recorded? Did a label want to and he declined?)... is that he not proud of them. And if that's the issue, he should get over himself. If he's not proud enough of his work on these scores to have them recorded for posterity then he shouldn't have taken them to broadway. I think the cast (etc) deserve to have their work preserved. And even if it flopped, even if it's bad, I'm in favor of every musical that makes it to broadway being recorded for preservation in the form it took for Broadway. I think it's so sad we didn't get a cast album of Carrie, even if they'd never have let that version be performed again. Anyway... I hope Tammy Faye gets an album, and I'm sorry that Lestat did not. And I think Elton should pay for them if no one else wanted to. |
