I believe he was nominated for a Tony the same year as "Funny Girl" for which Eydie Gorme had been a strong possibility for Fanny and who wanted equally big name husband Lawrence as co-star; however, the producers (and in particular, apparently, Fanny Brice's daughter Fran Stark, married to producer Ray) didn't want Steve Lawrence to play her Dad. She wanted someone with more traditionally matinee idol looks to play her Dad; Steve Lawrence actually was more the actual Nick Arnstein type. Fran Stark was also originally quite vehemently against Streisand's casting, too again because of Fran's fantasy that Fanny had traditional leading lady looks as well. I think Steve and Eydie would have been great, as she in particular possessed a powerhouse voice and a good sense of humor. Frankly, without "Funny Girl" working out for Streisand so well, there aren't that many leading roles that were actually produced afterwards that Streisand might have actually been cast in or considered to be cast in, since it was "Funny Girl" which made her a star. She's very fortunate Eydie turned it down or was otherwise out of contention.
