| That's from Frank Rich's New York Times review. I've been meaning to reply here, but haven't had a chance. So much to say. There had been a workshop before the Broadway run. It seems that people who saw the workshop thought the show would be a hit. The theatre was too big for the show, the set was misconceived and poorly executed, and Alan Jay Lerner should not have directed. I thnk a better director could have improved things greatly. At times, it was like seeing a revival directed by someone who didn't understand the material. He was apparently dissatisfied with his recent experiences with some other directors. The score has a lot of excellent stuff. I even like the songs that some people don't like. I can live without "What Are You Gonna Do About It?" Lerner and Strouse were not the first people to try to musicalize Idiot's Delight. It was probably a mistake to update it. As for earlier Broadway musicals with an openly gay couple who have principal roles (discussed in earlier replies), there was the short-lived and quickly forgotten Sextet in 1974. |
