Those "Brigadoon" songs were probably deemed too risque. Plus they probably took away from having Gene Kelly front and center. But his role really originally was more of a singing role, and Kelly's voice might have been fine on stage as "Pal Joey", but by the time he hit Hollywood, I found his singing something more on the level of having to tolerate until he started dancing. Donald O'Connor, Gene Nelson and Fred Astaire all had better singing voices among star dancers. Of course, they built up the dancing, but the movie still tanked and sleeper hit "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" became the big musical hit that year. |
