| As with many things, the answer depends on one's perspective. Newt's house manager is not wrong, from his inside FOH/looking out perspective. Scanners are the weak link in that chain for sure. From outside looking in, I see people inexplicably lined up way too early, as if the show is general admission. That then has a snowball effect on both the size of the line (no one wants to be at the back of a line so they reactively line up sooner than they would) and, even more so, on the crush at the door. From BOH, there are immutable situations that make giving the house to the FOH sooner complicated, expensive, and unrealistic. And from an event management perspective, there are quite a few faults to be spread around. 1. There are much better scanning systems than those used in Broadway theatres. (Carnegie Hall has a better system for example and so do most all sports stadiums, both with their own share of challenges in scale and logistics.) 2. Far too many people waiting to go through security and scanning wait until they are "up" to start preparing to do what is needed (even though they had plenty of opportunity to observe and in many cases there are also signs and verbal notifications to open bags, have tickets or phones open and ready to present, etc. (I don't find security "rude," but assume not paying better attention as per #2 above would cause some people to get cranky when they can't do their job over and over.) 3. More avenue of ingress, and more personnel throughout the process, would often pay dividends. Finally, this is not really a League issue because each landlord (and house) manages its own situation. And some do a better job than others. (And of course we should also acknowledge that some theatres were designed better for dealing with the problems that we see.) |
