I hate to prejudge any work, but I am mystified by the timing of the show's development, and wonder who is considered the target audience. Those of us who lived through the era know that the material arrives with hoary elements of self-parody that cannot be stripped away. Televangelism is a garish brew of show biz, the con of self-help, and tent revivals. But its tropes are so baked into the culture, including Broadway musicals, they are fully known. Messner herself may be a compelling Horatio Alger tale. But her ambition and innate-slash-found humanity - whether in sync or contention - have utterly predicable trajectories. We've seen an opera about Jerry Springer, several musicals about ministers, and countless tales of the darkness in celebrity, especially those incorporating the role of gender. Arguably, the first lady of Argentina's story was one we didn't know in 1979. The indifference in almost every post I've read reflects a fundamental absence of emotional suspense in the Messner narrative. It's not just that we know the end; we know too much about her very public struggle. Surprise is still required somewhere in any theatrical journey.
