I concur. I saw the original production several times — the set got applause at more than one performance I attended. It really was spectacular. The entire production ranks in my Top 5. I saw Kahn and Kaye and they were both FANTASTIC (with Kaye being significantly more consistent, not just over the course of the run, but through the performance). The casting of the original was brilliant. Every player at the top of their game. Kline was as daffy as can be. His “what the Hells going ON?” Still makes me laugh. He was electric. The only casting they got right at the Roundabout were the porters. That Act 2 opening number at the Roundabout was such joy. They were in perfect sync and really brought the house down. Oh, but WHY didn’t they give Mrs. Primrose to Carol Burnett? She’d have really been something. |
